Games & Goals - Orreco Optimized Podcast EP 07

Our podcast, Optimized, is our opportunity to bring you news from the frontline of elite sports performance, where biomarkers and analytics meets the possibilities of A.I. and machine learning. It’s also our chance to bring you the latest on what Orreco is up to.

In this episode of Orreco’s ‘Optimized’ podcast called ‘‘Games and Goals”, Marc Cleary is joined by Dr Paul Catterson, club doctor for Premier League side and long standing Orreco client, Newcastle United FC.

Marc and Dr. Catterson discuss his initial introduction to Orreco, nine years ago in the weeks following Euro 2012, to further investigate an athlete experiencing unexplained underperformance syndrome. Dr. Catterson outlines in detail how biomarker use has evolved within Newcastle United and how testing is incorporated around the weekly match schedules for optimal monitoring throughout the season.

They also describe how to introduce new management and players to blood monitoring and ways to gain buy in and trust, up and down the chain of command. From players differentiating themselves from other similarly talented players, and management connecting poor performance and mood states with disturbed markers of recovery.

Talk then turns to the roll Dr. Catterson played in the swift development of Orreco’s Covid-19 Tracker App. The Orreco App, which was first used by Newcastle, identifies temperatures and symptoms for medical staff before players arrived to the training ground. Dr. Catterson who was part of a senior group of Premier League Doctors dealing with Covid-19, helped share this solution with his colleagues for their clubs use and the safe return of athletes and staff to training during the initial stages of the pandemic.

The conversation then moves to the shock of the Euro 2020 tournament with the collapse of Christian Erickson due to cardiac arrest, and Dr. Catterson’s own experience saving the life of referee Eddie Wolstenholme, who suffered a heart attack in the tunnel prior to the Burnley v Newcastle match in2018. Dr. Catterson gives his insight to what we can all do to be prepared and to understand that screening doesn’t completely mitigate risk. Preparation and swift action are key.

Finally the two discuss some new exciting Orreco biostatistical projects that are being developed to reduce the incidents of injury within the football club. More to come on this in due course.
